How to style black and white artwork

How to style black and white artwork

Start with the wall

Soft white gives an open, gallery like feel to the space, whereas a deep grey or muted green creates a dramatic accent wall. Black and white artwork is high contrast and draws attention in a space, so give it somewhere to really pop.

Frame it like it matters

A simple thin black frame with a white mount looks modern and classy. The mount visually enlarges the piece and gives it space to breathe. Or you could go with a natural wood to warm it up and make it feel more earthy.

Placement

The ideal height is approximately eye level - roughly 150cm from the floor. For a small piece, place it above a sideboard or on a small feature wall but don’t overcrowd it. Small pieces also look great as part of a gallery wall with other black and white artworks. Keep spacing between each piece consistent. For a bigger piece give it lots of space. Make it feel important and curated. Place it above a sofa or dining table to anchor it in the room.

Styling

For a minimal, Scandinavian look, pair white walls with light wooden furniture. One framed piece makes the space look calm and clean. If you like modern monochrome spaces, a white sofa with black accents looks bold and works well with metal and strong graphic shapes. For a warmer, more eclectic look, add wood and leather with plenty of texture. Linen cushions, wool throws, woven rugs and matte finishes work well. Add plants to soften the space and make that connection with nature.

Lighting

Highlight your artwork with picture lighting or a well-positioned accents such as a floor or table lamp. It gives texture and makes it feel important in the space.

I am always curious about where my artwork goes after it leaves the studio. Over the years people have sent me pictures of my art in their homes and it has been such a delight. If you have something I created hanging in your home would like to share it with me, tag me on social media or send me an email!
