About

Gemma Dunn linocut artist portrait

I am a fine artist and printmaker based in Salisbury, UK. I work primarily in hand-printed linocut, creating delicate, intricately detailed works inspired by my deep connection to the natural world. I enjoy spending time wandering, foraging, and the simple pleasure of gathering found treasures from the landscape. My prints are an invitation to pause and look closely, to notice the subtle details and beauty that might otherwise be overlooked. I love the slow, mindful rhythm of printmaking and share this appreciation through the workshops I lead at a local nature reserve.

I was born in South Africa and studied Product Design at Loughborough University. Although my creative practice has always centred on drawing and painting, I returned to linocut in 2013 while experimenting with printing my own fabric designs. I was drawn to the methodical printmaking process and to the idea that every hand-pulled print is both an original artwork and part of a larger whole. Each print is unique, yet connected through one shared carved block, creating a relationship between every piece and the people who live with it.

What I love most about linocut is that the process itself shapes the finished work in ways I can never fully anticipate. It asks me to relinquish a little control and embrace the unexpected. Unlike a painting or drawing, where the image develops gradually before my eyes, printmaking always has a surprise reveal. My favourite part of teaching is watching the joy on someone's face when they make their first print.

Nature is at the heart of everything I create because I believe we are not separate from it, but part of it. My hope is that my prints encourage a sense of belonging and help people rediscover the connection that already exists between ourselves and the living world.
